Welcome to the Kindergarten School of Ship Modeling!
Lesson No. 1 — Building the Famous Skiff
"Welcome, rookie modeler!"
Today, we're learning to assemble your first wooden boat: the famous Skiff. So, pull up a chair, get your workbench ready, and let's get started!
Meet the Skiff
If you've spent time around American lakes and rivers, you've probably seen these small, flat-bottomed rowboats. Known as *skiffs*, they're practical utility boats prized for their light weight and simplicity. Their flat bottoms make them easy to beach and convenient to store aboard larger boats and yachts.
This kit represents an **8-foot, 6-inch, two-person skiff**, based on a traditional 19th-century dory-built design that remains useful today.
A Beginner-Friendly Kit
This is the second model released by Model Expo under license from Midwest Products, with more models expected to follow.
One of its best features is the **33-page, easy-to-understand construction manual**, which includes illustrations to help you follow the full-size plans and assemble the laser-cut wooden parts correctly.
We'll use both the plans and manual as our classroom guides.
There's no need to rush—learning how the pieces fit together is just as important as completing the model.

Lesson 2 — Getting Started: The Bottom Plank, Transom, and Frames
Here we have all the parts needed to build our little Skiff.
But don't let their simplicity fool you! Although this model may look easy to assemble, some of the small parts can be a little fiddly to handle.
Nothing to worry about, rookies! We'll take it one step at a time, and I'll include as many photographs as possible to help you follow along.
Step 1 — Preparing the Bottom Plank
Start by placing the bottom plank over the corresponding drawing on your plan. Align it carefully so you can use the markings on the plan to position the cleats accurately.
While the plank is in place, take a moment to lightly sand its edges. The goal is to keep them smooth and square, at a 90-degree angle to the surface, so the adjoining parts will fit properly.
(Rookie tip:) Take your time with this initial setup. Accurate alignment now will make the following steps much easier!
Step 2 — Installing the Transom and Stern Knee
The first two parts to glue in place are the "transom" and the "stern knee".
The transom forms the flat rear end of the boat, while the stern knee reinforces the joint between the transom and the bottom plank.
Check their positions against the plans before applying glue. Make sure both pieces are properly aligned and seated before allowing the adhesive to set.
Step 3 — Adding the Cleats
Next, install the cleats along the bottom plank, following the positions marked on the plan.
These small strips of wood help locate and support the frames during assembly. Check each one carefully before gluing it down, making sure it sits straight and in the correct position.
Step 4 — Installing the Frames
With the cleats in place, you can begin fitting the frames.
Work carefully, checking each frame against the plans and ensuring that it sits correctly in its intended position. Don't rush this stage. Accurate placement will help keep the hull straight and symmetrical as construction progresses.
And that's our first major step completed!
(Remember, rookies:)
model boat building is all about patience, accuracy, and taking things one step at a time. You don't have to be an expert to get good results—you just need to follow the plans and enjoy the process.
Stay tuned for the next lesson as we continue building our little Skiff!

O Skiff — Seu Primeiro Passo no Modelismo Naval em Madeira! The Skiff — Your First Step into Wooden Ship Modeling!O Skiff — Seu Primeiro Passo no Modelismo Naval em Madeira!
Etapa 1 — Preparando a Quilha Inferior
Etapa 3 — Adicionando as Cunalhas
Etapa 4 — Instalando as Cavernas
Lesson 2 — Getting Started: The Bottom Plank, Transom, and Frames
Preparing the Strongback
The strongback is the wooden support that keeps the hull framework correctly aligned while we work on the planking.
First, mark the centerline along the 9-inch hardwood block. Following the manual, mark a line 7 inches from one end, then mark lines 5/16 inch on either side of the centerline.
Using a sharp hobby knife, carefully carve approximately 45-degree bevels along both sides of the marked area, extending them 1 inch beyond the 7-inch mark.
These bevels provide clearance for the side planks when they are bent into position.
Finally, glue the two small wooden shims in their specified positions, making sure they are centered and square to the centerline.
(Rookie tip:)
Work slowly and follow the measurements in the manual carefully. The strongback must be prepared accurately to keep the hull straight during assembly.

Securing the Bottom Plank to the Strongback
Now that our strongback is prepared, it's time to position the bottom plank and get the correct curvature before installing the side planks.
First, center the bottom plank on the strongback and align it with the marks on the plan.
Use the two push-pins shown in this picture to hold the bottom plank against the strongback. Make sure the plank remains properly centered.
Now install the third push-pin at the bow, exactly where shown in the picture. With all three pins in place, carefully adjust their positions until the bottom plank follows the correct curvature to meet the side planks.
Take your time with this step, rookies! A little patience now will make fitting the side planks much easier.
Adding the Temporary Braces
Before moving on to the side planks, we need to reinforce the framework.
Fit the temporary **spall** across the top front of Frame #1, following the kit instructions.
This helps strengthen the frame during planking.
Next, install the **stem brace**, carefully beveling its ends as directed in the manual. It helps keep the bow properly aligned during the next stages of construction.
And that's it for this lesson! Our bottom plank is secured, and the framework is ready for the next step: fitting the side planks.

Adicionando as Escoras Temporárias

Installing the Side Planks and Completing the Hull
Now it's time to give our little Skiff its hull shape!
Step 1 — Fitting the Side Planks
Lightly sand the edges of both side planks to remove any burrs or rough spots. Remember, the wider ends face the bow.
Fit the first plank against the bottom plank, frames, stem, and transom. Align its upper edge with the tops of the stem and transom, allowing a little extra wood to extend beyond both ends for trimming.
Once you're happy with the fit, glue the plank in place using the adhesive recommended in the manual. Repeat the same procedure on the opposite side.
Make sure the side plank fits snugly against the transom and the bottom plank before the glue sets.
With both sides in place, the basic hull shape is now taking form. Notice that the planks extend beyond the ends, leaving extra material for final trimming.
Step 2 — Trimming and Fairing
Once the glue has set, remove the stem brace and push-pins, then carefully lift the hull from the strongback.
Check the alignment from the stern to make sure the stem is square with the transom. Trim the excess wood at the bow and stern, then carefully sand the side planks flush with the bottom plank and the adjoining parts.
Take your time here, rookies! A smooth, even edge will make the next steps much easier.
Step 3 — Installing the Breasthook
The breasthook is the small, pre-cut piece fitted inside the bow. Sand its edges to create a close fit against the back of the stem and both side planks.
Position it flush with the upper edges of the side planks and glue it in place. This helps support the bow where the two sides meet.
Step 4 — Adding the Chafing Plank
Turn the hull over and prepare the long strip that runs down the center of the bottom.
The manual specifies an **8-inch length of 1/16″ × 1/4″ basswood stripwood**.
Center it over the bottom plank's joint line, starting at the blunt end of the stem, and glue it in place. Trim and sand the ends flush with the transom and stem.
This strip is called the **chafing plank**. It protects the bottom of the skiff from wear.
Step 5 — Fitting the False Stem
Now we can finish the outside of the bow.
Cut a piece of basswood measuring **¼″ × ¼″ × 1⅜″**. Glue it centrally over the front of the stem and the ends of the side planks, making sure it overlaps them.
After the glue has cured, use a sanding block to shape the false stem to a point, blending it smoothly and flush with the side planks. Work along the length of the stem so you don't accidentally sand through the thin side planking.
Pic. 23 — Shaping the bow**
The hull now has its basic shape. The bow piece will be sanded to blend with the side planks and create a clean, even finish.
Step 6 — Adding the Rear Seat Risers
We're nearly ready to move on to the interior!
The last parts in this stage are the rear seat risers, which support the rear seat.
Cut two pieces, each **1¼ inches long**, from the 1/16″ × 1/8″ basswood strip (in my case, I used mahogany.)
Mark their positions 5/16″ below the upper edges of the side planks, near the transom. Glue them against the inside of the side planks, with their ends butted against the transom.
And there we have it, rookies! Our little Skiff finally has its hull shape, a finished bow, and the supports for the rear seat.

Lesson 4 — Painting the Skiff and Preparing the Oars
Now that our little Skiff is almost finished, it's time to think about the paint and final details.
If you prefer a solid color like I chose for my model, now is the time to prime the hull. Of course, you can also leave the wood in its natural color and apply a clear finish. It's entirely up to you!
I used automotive primer and have had very good results with it. Apply light, even coats and allow them to dry thoroughly before adding your chosen finish.
With the hull prepared, we can move on to the smaller details. While the finish was drying, I started working on the oars.
These are the wooden pieces used for the remaining details. Keep the parts organized so you can identify them easily as you work.
The kit includes the wooden pieces needed to make the oars. Take your time shaping and sanding them, paying attention to the blades so they look alike.
These small wooden blocks support the metal oarlocks. Each block has a stepped underside and a hole for the metal fitting. They will be installed along the sides of the boat during final assembly.
Here are the products I used to finish my model. I've had good results with the automotive primer shown, but feel free to use the paints and finishes you're most comfortable working with.
Remember, rookies, there is no single color scheme you have to follow. The important thing is to prepare the surfaces properly, let each coat dry, and take your time with the finishing work.

Lesson 4 — Painting the Skiff and Preparing the Oars
Lesson 5 — Painting the Interior and Fitting the Seats
After spending some time masking the areas with low-tack masking tape, I airbrushed the interior with "Vallejo Deep Sky Blue"
I painted the upper edges, breasthook, upper transom knees, center-seat risers, and inwales in flat white, along with the rest of the Skiff's exterior. The blue-and-white combination gives the little boat a nice, clean appearance.
Here's the interior after painting, showing the Deep Sky Blue finish and the white trim along the upper edges.
Installing the Floorboards and Seats
After allowing the paint to dry for about half a day, I began working on the wooden interior fittings.
For the floorboards, I used "Minwax 2716 Dark Walnut".
I like this stain because it produces a beautiful dark finish that matches the clear-finished guards supplied with the kit.
When fitting the floorboards, use the plan as a guide and keep them evenly spaced. The manual shows how to position the center board first, then fit the remaining boards using small wooden spacers.
The floorboards are positioned inside the hull, together with the rear mahogany seat. Check the fit carefully before securing the parts.
Once the floorboards are in place, install the center-seat risers as directed in the manual. These support the middle seat and must be positioned at the correct height.
Remember, you can choose your own colors and finishes. The important thing is to prepare the surfaces properly, allow the paint to dry, and take your time fitting the smaller parts.

Lesson 5 — Painting the Interior and Fitting the Seats
Lesson 6 — Final Details and Graduation Day!
After installing the inwales, the next step was to add the mahogany guards along the upper outside edges of the hull. I finished them with two coats of semi-gloss clear, which really brings out the beauty of the wood.
The guards add a nice finishing touch to the white hull and complement the blue interior beautifully.
Here's a view of the interior, showing the blue finish, white inwales, and wooden seating.
The dark walnut floorboards and mahogany seats provide a pleasing contrast against the blue interior. I used Minwax 2716 Dark Walnut on the floorboards to complement the woodwork.
With the seats, floorboards, and interior fittings in place, we can appreciate how all the different pieces come together.
The kit includes the parts for a pair of oars, along with the metal oarlocks and cordage. After finishing the oars in white and blue to match the hull, I fitted them inside the boat for the final presentation.
Building the Display Stand
The kit also provides a small piece of 1/4″ × 1/4″ basswood for making a display stand. I stained it with the same Minwax Dark Walnut used on the floorboards so that the finish would match.
To make the stand, cut a **1/8″ × 3/8″ notch** along its centerline, following the kit instructions. The notch accommodates the chafing plank underneath the hull. Position the stand beneath Frame #1, with the notch fitted over the chafing plank.
This simple support keeps the finished model steady and makes it easy to display.
And That's a Wrap!
That's the end of a week's work on our little Skiff!
Thank you for following along. I sincerely hope this building log helps newcomers who would love to enter the wonderful world of wooden ship modeling but aren't sure where to begin.
Remember, you don't need to be an expert to get started. Take your time, follow the plans, learn from each step, and most importantly, enjoy the process.
And now, rookies, it's time for your graduation!
Congratulations! You've passed Kindergarten School of Ship Modeling!

To make the stand, cut a *1/8″ × 3/8″ notch* along its centerline, following the kit instructions.
