Epoxy glue....how to remove it?

Hi Haggis, l proposed this Question last year l used colins method. My propshaft was damaged so any more damage did not matter. I cut as much off the shaft as possible inside of the boat. Then placed the tip of a soldering iron into the shaft.
I also warmed the out side shaft with a small blowtorch you do have to be very carefull !!!! the glue / epoxy gets soft grip the shaft with a set of grips / pliers and twist gently.
Worked like a dream, good luck stay safe Jim.

Epoxy glue....how to remove it?

Hi Scott,

Almost all my 25+ power boats of all kinds use just one shaft not two.

Most problems seem to come from the ESC, couplings and shafts. Two rudders and linkages are then also needed and that is even before we start with the prolems of additional weight, complication, access and lack of space.

In short, stay with one shaft wherever possible.

Epoxy glue....how to remove it?

John I feel the toothache coming on just reading that.... Ouch. I'll sleep on it wether I decide to go back to single screw from twin. I like the aesthetic look of twin but needing more room for additional items and she sails fine on one

Scott

Like others I found that best from a large soldering iron (remove prop shaft from tube first) combined with twisting pressure from a pair of pliers should do the job.

If in doubt just pretend to be a dentist!!

A monakote (sp?) dryer works as well or better than a hair dryer, and is an inexpensive tool to have around.
So many ships . . . and so little time . . .

Thanks for all the advice. Will try with heat first and see how that goes. They are well epoxied

Epoxy glue....how to remove it?

Hi HH,
Heating the Epoxy glue with a hair drier makes the Epoxy go soft, then as the other guys have said grip, twist, pull.

Martin555.
If it looks right it probably is.

I removed mine in exactly the same way as Colin. If you do not want to damage the shaft, wrap it in 320 grit emery cloth under the grips.
Peter.👍
I cannot promise to finish one project before starting another. I know, I tried.

Epoxy glue....how to remove it?

Hi Scott, in my experience of refurbishing old boats I always remove the shaft tubes by warming the tube with a large soldering iron whilst my wife grips the end with pliers and applies twist and pull. I've never had to hit a shaft tube in 30 plus years of refurbishing models.
Hope you find this useful, cheers Colin.

Epoxy glue....how to remove it?

Hi Scott
I usually dremel as much away as possible. Take the propshaft out then hit the outer shaft with a large hammer (sharp tap) using a piece of wood to protect the end. Usually this breaks any remaining bond and you can grip the shaft with pliers and twist out. If you did a good job when fitting this may take some time.

Epoxy glue....how to remove it?

Hi everyone I'm wondering what is the best way of removing epoxy glue. I had epoxied my propshafts in place but want to remove them without damage

Thanks
