If you scroll down on the Home page to build blogs you'll see it. Look for one starting with Aerokits 1962.. When it slips from the top 4, select See all Blogs and you'll find it. Good luck. Ed

Agreed, doing this as well as sealing the interior as well. It is going to be a busy year but think it will be interesting.

Sea Commander Rebuild

I was discussing the boat today with some local model builders, one said i could be throwing good after bad, the other said it is the sort of project he would take on.

Seeing the timbers are now bone dry, i might look at different fixes for the keel then do as suggested, glass the interior as well as exterior, stripping it back to bare timber. Weight could be an issue but i am just going to use it for enjoyment and getting it back where it belongs.

Good thought and nice looking boat. Considering I have had the hull over two years I think it is time to do something with it. So many projects waiting, would like to make the rc Flyer 15 but need to hone my skills a tad.

Sea Commander Rebuild

Hi Peter, You might be better off applying glass cloth to the outside which will preserve it forever. Did this with my 'Fairacre' launch which I was given in rotten condition (balsa built). Patched the hull, sanded it and glassed it. Could have poked your finger through it before, now tough as nails. Very small weight gain.

Sea Commander Rebuild

Hi Peter. I am renovating an RAF Crash Tender my father and I built in 1962 and strengthened the badly damaged hull by fiberglassing the whole boat from the inside. Resin leaked through in places, but when everything set and rough parts sanded off, the structure was stiff and a float test produced only one easily fixed leak. Would think this would be easier than making a mould, but mine only had small areas of actual rot. You have to watch the weight though. My blog for this project is 'Aerokits 1962 34.5" RAF Crash Tender rebuild, including interior'. Good luck. Ed

Thanks for that. If I end up with a sound hull there are a lot of options with super structures and deck layouts.

It will be a long term project so I will need to get it right. Another boat to join my 3 sailboats. Life is interesting.

Hi Peter - the saying goes whatever floats your boat - so the choice is yours . Think I have a plan somewhere with most parts drawn but it might well be easier to use it as a plug - especially if you are good with moulding - the original cabin was pretty good but its all up to you regarding the superstructure too. Have a plan here for Ravenna which is a very pretty launch drawn by James Pottinger I believe (memorys bad). Similar to what you have shown in pic2 but might be more suitable.........
The cabin would be big enough to hide the working bits too.

Sea Commander Rebuild

My daughter gave me an old Aerokit Sea Commander that she found. Timber was pretty rotten so i tried to seal it with some fibreglass but the structural timbers were too far gone and it leaked badly. Thinking of using the hull as a plug and making a glass version of it which should solve some issues. As the top decks were all splintered I would try and convert it to something similar to the second image.

Has anyone done anything like this or am i better off starting from scratch? Just thinking out loud.
